Partnership formed to tackle motor neurone disease

19 November 2013

joostEveryone at the Euan MacDonald Centre thoroughly enjoyed their visit from South African rugby star Joost van der Westhuizen last week.

Joost, who has MND, visited with representatives of his J9 Foundation. He toured the labs, chatted with Euan MacDonald and his family, and met members of the University's rugby club at a press conference.

In the evening, there was a highly successful fundraising quiz, Joost a Sports Quiz, at Murrayfield Stadium.

The visit will foster partnerships on MND research between Scotland and South Africa.

Solving the enormous challenge of MND or ALS requires partnership and collaboration. We are delighted to work with South African colleagues and the J9 foundation to promote better understanding of this devastating disease.

Professor Siddharthan Chandran, Director of the Euan MacDonald Centre

The event was widely covered in the national and international press and online media, for instance the BBC News, STV News, US Medical News Net.
