Richard Davenport qualified from Nottingham in 1987, completed general medical training in Stroke-on-Trent, moved to Edinburgh in 1992, and after a DM thesis in stroke spent a year in Australia, before returning to Edinburgh as one of the last Senior Registrars. He was appointed consultant neurologist in 1999; whilst very much a general neurologist, he has worked in various sub-specialities over the years, currently undertaking first seizure, movement disorder and motor neurone disease (MND) clinics in addition to general neurology. He was elected to the Association of British Neurologists Council in 2009, appointed Chair of the Training and Education committee in 2010, demitting in 2016. In 2017 Richard was appointed Chair of the National Advisory Committee for Neurological Conditions. In his spare time, he is Secretary of MRCP Neurology Speciality Certificate Exam (SCE) board, member of the MRCP part 1 exam board and member of the standard setting board for Neurology (SCE). He is an external examiner for the University of Glasgow year 5 exams. He organises and chairs the annual Edinburgh Neurology Course, celebrating its 40th year in 2018, and organises the weekly local neurology trainee teaching, including regular neurology book clubs.
